Indus Motor Company (IMC), renowned for assembling Toyota vehicles in Pakistan, has taken a significant step forward by signing an agreement with Toyota Egypt, making it a part of the prestigious club of automakers exporting vehicles to foreign markets. This move aligns IMC with other notable names in the industry, including Master Changan Motors Limited (MCML) and Sazgar Engineering Works Limited (SEWL).
In line with this development, Toyota IMC recently dispatched its first shipment to Toyota Egypt in July. This inaugural shipment consisted of semi-processed raw materials, marking the commencement of an exciting new era for Pakistan’s original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in terms of exports. The company’s official press release emphasized its commitment to continue expanding its export capabilities.
Ali Asghar Jamali, CEO of Toyota IMC, acknowledged the significance of this achievement for the auto industry in Pakistan. However, he remained cautiously optimistic about its immediate impact, acknowledging that it may be too early to label it as a turning point for the industry, which has been grappling with various challenges.
Pakistan’s auto industry heavily relies on imports, and the sector has faced significant pressures due to restrictions on Letters of Credit (LC) and limited foreign exchange reserves. Although the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has taken steps to ease these restrictions, achieving a sense of normalcy will take time.
Discussing the company’s export plans, Jamali described the current efforts as a modest beginning, citing raw material constraints in the country as a limiting factor for exporting large quantities. However, he expressed hope for the future, stating that if Egypt’s confidence in IMC’s capabilities builds, the company may receive requests to export additional parts. Even exporting a single component to multiple markets would contribute to an increase in IMC’s overall export numbers. Furthermore, Jamali expressed optimism that this development would inspire other manufacturers to gain confidence and explore their own avenues for export.
