President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari has officially summoned the budget session of the National Assembly for June 5 at 5:00 PM, while the Senate session has been called for the same day at 6:00 PM, according to official sources.
The ruling follows parliamentary schedule changes made because of the annual Hajj season, when over 60 MPs are on pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia and will be coming back in the first week of June.
Reason Behind Schedule Change
The government had originally intended to hold separate budget session for both Houses of Parliament on June 1. However, as there was no significant number of lawmakers, the plan was adjusted to make for maximum participation in one of the most important parliamentary proceedings of the year.
The revised schedule is said to be to help smooth the way for the federal budget presentation and debate when lawmakers resume sessions.
Key Parliamentary Arrangements
- National Assembly budget session: June 5, 5:00 PM
- Senate budget session: June 5, 6:00 PM
- Earlier proposed date: June 1 (changed)
- Reason: Absence of lawmakers due to Hajj pilgrimage
Political Context
The budget session is an important constitutional necessity when the federal government makes its financial presentation for the following fiscal year. Any change in its timetable is a sign of organizational scheduling and political agreements between the executive and legislative powers.
The government will likely move on to the budget discussions in the first few days of the lawmakers’ return in early June. The forthcoming budget 2026 will likely emphasize on economic stabilization, tax reforms, and prioritisation of public expenditure.
