Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Emir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has called on the federal government to reduce the petrol price in Pakistan to Rs225 per litre, arguing that the recent decline in global crude oil prices should directly benefit consumers.
Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman said that the international crude oil prices have come down almost to pre-conflict prices, and Pakistani people are still paying high prices of petrol. He said the government should put people first and lower prices rather than keeping the existing fuel prices.
Global Oil Price Decline Should Benefit Consumers
The supreme leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami also called for the government to allow the people to reap the benefits of reduced global oil prices. He emphasized the need to relieve the common man from the burden of increasing prices instead of diverting them into other segments of the fuel chain.
Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman also called on the government to revise the petrol price to Rs225 per litre, as the public interest must take precedence over the interests of oil marketing companies.
Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman Criticizes Petroleum Levy
The Jamaat-e-Islami chief denounced the petroleum levy, calling it “unlawful and immoral. He urged the government to remove the levy as soon as possible to lift the burden on the people affected by the inflation.
If the petroleum levy is dropped, he said, it would offer much-needed financial relief and help reduce transportation and household costs.
Calls for Lower Transport Fares and Essential Commodity Prices
Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman added that if petrol rates are cut, then the prices of commodities and public transport fares should also be reduced overall in Pakistan.
He also advised the government to take concrete measures to restore the prices of basic needs to the status quo of February 28, saying that inflation has hit the ordinary families’ livelihood.
Rising Inflation Continues to Pressure Pakistani Consumers
While the country faces economic issues, Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman emphasised that inflation remains a heavy burden on households. He urged policymakers to take steps to help the people and not the businesses.
The Jamaat-e-Islami leader reiterated that lowering the price of petrol in Pakistan, in sync with the decline in global crude oil prices, will help in reducing transportation cost and ease the inflationary pressure on consumers.
