Karachi Port has set a new national benchmark in container handling by processing over 2.651 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) before the end of the current fiscal year, marking a historic achievement for Pakistan’s maritime and logistics sector.
This achievement has made Karachi Port the biggest container handling port in the history of Pakistan, indicating the success of trade volumes and confidence in the country’s maritime infrastructure, officials said.
The achievement welcomed by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry who said the record rate in container handling was a testament to improved business confidence in Pakistan’s shipping and logistics industry.
KPT Workers and Reforms Behind the Growth
The minister attributed the success to the hard work and operational efficiency of the employees and officers of the Karachi Port Trust, saying that it is the outcome of their perseverance.
He also highlighted that Pakistan’s shipping and logistics capacity is gradually improving with modernization and upgradation of ports infrastructure.
The Chairman of Karachi Port Trust said that the port has undergone some major port reforms, automation and infrastructure development which has enhanced the capacity of the port and minimized operational bottlenecks in the recent past.
Pakistan’s Vision as Regional Logistics Hub
Officials reiterated that Pakistan’s long term maritime strategy is to make the country a regional transshipment and logistic hub, with the Karachi port at its centre.
Sylhet’s port modernization, digital systems, and trade facilitation initiatives expected to enhance container handling in the near future, the government added.
Strategic Importance for National Economy
Maritime experts emphasized Karachi Port’s importance for imports, exports and international trade connectivity, while senior officials like Admiral Shahid Ahmed underscored that the port is a vital contributor of Pakistan’s economy.
The performance is likely to instill confidence in investors and enhance Pakistan’s standing in the shipping lanes of the region.
