Major Commercial Hubs Shut Down in Karachi as Electronics Traders Observe Strike

Over 90 percent of commercial activity in Karachi’s major markets came to a standstill as electronics traders observed a shutter-down strike to protest a recent crackdown and arrests at Rambo Centre.

A complete shutter-down strike was observed across Karachi’s key commercial districts today, severely disrupting commercial operations in Saddar, Regal, and surrounding markets. Over 90 percent of shops and business setups remained closed throughout the day, leaving major trading centers completely deserted.

The strike was called by the Karachi Electronics Dealers Association (KEDA), led by the Rizwan Irfan group. The demonstration was organized to protest a recent law enforcement crackdown at Rambo Centre, which resulted in the arrest of several local traders.

Divisions Among Trader Associations

While KEDA initiated the protest, divisions emerged within the local business community regarding the shutdown:

• KEDA (Rizwan Irfan Group): Demanded the immediate release of arrested shopkeepers and an end to raids on commercial centers, leading to the closure across major electronics hubs.
• KMEDA (Minhaj Gulfam Group): The Karachi Mobile and Electronics Dealers Association distanced itself from the strike call, advocating instead for dialogue with authorities.

Despite the rift between the two trade factions, major retail and wholesale hubs, including Hashoo Centre, Amma Tower, Regal Market, and Rambo Centre, remained locked.

Economic Impact on Daily Business

The unexpected shutdown resulted in commercial losses worth millions of rupees across the electronics and mobile sectors. Market representatives noted that the closure hit daily-wage workers and small retail shop employees hardest, as routine trade and supply chain movements remained suspended for the entire day.
