Muharram 2026 Moon Sighting: Ruet-e-Hilal Committee to Meet Today

The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee is scheduled to meet today for the sighting of the Muharram 1448 Hijri crescent moon, marking the possible beginning of the new Islamic year in Pakistan.
The meeting will chaired by the head of the Committee at the historic Badshahi Mosque Lahore, where religious scholars and meteorological experts will discuss the moon sighting reports received from all over the country, as per the details.
Muharram 1448 Start Date and Ashura Prediction
The initial astronomical calculations and expert forecasts suggest that the 9th and 10th of Muharram (Youm-e-Ashura) are likely to occur on June 25 and 26, 2026. However, the final confirmation will issued after the official moon sighting announcement by the committee.
Expected Public Holidays in Pakistan
With the beginning of the sacred month of Muharram, there is a strong possibility of two consecutive public holidays in Pakistan during Ashura. The official notification regarding holidays will released after the moon sighting decision.
Saudi Arabia Moon Sighting Meeting
At the same time, a similar moon sighting meeting is also taking place in Saudi Arabia this evening to establish the Kingdom’s independent starting of Muharram. In Islamic countries, the decisions of the lunar calendar usually made in a coordinated fashion, considering the observations of the moon in the region.
Significance of Muharram and Ashura
Muharram is among the most revered months of the Islamic calendar, while Ashura is an important religious day for Muslims around the world. It celebrated with prayers, lamentation and remembrance of historical Islamic events.
