Muharram-ul-Haram, the first month of the Islamic calendar and a sacred period in Islam, is expected to begin in Pakistan on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, according to astronomical projections and moon sighting calculations.
As per experts from the Ruet-e-Hilal Research Council, the new moon for Muharram 1448 AH will be born on June 15 at 7:54am Pakistan Standard Time (PST). However, despite the birth of the moon, conditions for visible crescent sighting on the same evening are not expected to be met across the country.
Why Muharram Will Likely Start on June 17
Astronomical data suggests that by sunset on June 15, the age of the moon will be less than 12 hours in Pakistan, which is significantly below the minimum threshold required for naked-eye visibility of the crescent. In addition, the time gap between sunset and moonset will remain limited—around 37 minutes in Karachi and 42 minutes in Peshawar—making visibility highly unlikely even with optical instruments.
Due to these factors, experts believe the Shawwal/Zil Hajj month will complete 30 days, leading to the expected start of Muharram on June 17, 2026.
Official Announcement Still Awaited
Despite scientific predictions, the final confirmation regarding the Muharram moon sighting will be made by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee after verifying testimonies from across the country.
Muharram is one of the four sacred months in Islam and marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year. The day holds deep religious significance, especially for commemorations observed on the 10th of Muharram (Ashura), which is widely observed throughout Pakistan.
Based on current astronomical calculations, the Muharram starting date in Pakistan is most likely June 17, 2026. However, the final decision will depend on official moon sighting announcements. Those searching for “When will Muharram start in Pakistan” should await confirmation from the official religious authorities.
