Broad Peak Avalanche in Pakistan: 4 Bodies Recovered, Search Continues for Missing Climbers

A deadly Broad Peak avalanche in northern Pakistan has claimed the lives of four mountaineers after an avalanche swept through the world’s 12th-highest peak. Rescue teams are continuing search operations for the remaining climbers who are still missing.

The accident took place at Broad Peak, a part of the Karakoram mountain range, which is one of the most popular high mountain destinations in Pakistan.

Search Operation Continues

Officials say 10 climbers were swept away in the avalanche. The missing ones include mountaineers from Pakistan, Nepal, China and the United States.

Weather conditions are harsh and the terrain is rough, but rescue teams have not yet been able to evacuate due to adverse conditions and are working hard to find the rest of the missing climbers.

Tourism Department Providing Support

Search and rescue efforts are ongoing and all available resources have been deployed, said Gilgit-Baltistan Tourism Minister Nek Nam Karim.

The Tourism Department is assisting rescue teams in the area, he added. There have been four bodies recovered so far, and officials say they are continuing to work on locating the others.

Broad Peak Among World’s Highest Mountains

Broad Peak (8,051 meters or 26,414 feet) is the 12th-tallest mountain in the world and is a popular destination for seasoned climbers from all over the world during the annual season. The mountain, however, is famous for its unpredictable weather, avalanches and dangerous climbing conditions.

The authorities have not yet announced the names of those who died, and the rescue is ongoing, keeping them hopeful for finding the other climbers.
