Government Announces Electric Bike Subsidy and Interest-Free Loans in Pakistan

The government has announced a major relief package for commuters by introducing subsidies and interest-free financing for electric bikes. The initiative aims to reduce fuel imports, promote environmentally friendly transportation, and make electric motorcycles more affordable for the public.

Speaking at the First International Insurance Conference in Karachi, Adviser to the Finance Minister Adnan Pasha said the government plans to introduce 2 million electric motorcycles across Pakistan in the coming years.

He noted that around 3 million motorcycles are registered every year in Pakistan, consuming imported petrol worth nearly $8 billion annually. According to him, shifting to electric motorcycles will help reduce fuel imports, save valuable foreign exchange, and lower carbon emissions.

To encourage adoption, the government will provide subsidies and interest-free financing for eligible buyers. However, Adnan Pasha acknowledged that local production and supply of electric motorcycles remain a challenge, adding that the government is working with stakeholders to improve manufacturing capacity.

Officials believe the electric bike initiative will support Pakistan’s clean energy goals while reducing transportation costs for consumers.
