Government Doubles Diyat Amount in Pakistan to Rs19.35 Million for FY 2026-27

The federal government has significantly increased the Diyat (blood money) amount in Pakistan, fixing the minimum compensation at Rs19,352,390 for the fiscal year 2026-27, following a sharp rise in global and local silver prices.

The notification released by the Ministry of Finance indicates that the revised figure of Diyat is Rs 9,523,720, which is about 96.9% higher than the earlier fixed amount of Rs 9,828,670 for the FY 2025-26.

Why Has the Diyat Amount Increased?

The combined value of Diyat is calculated according to Section 323 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and the price of 30,630 grams of silver in the market. Compensation has also gone up significantly in the last year, since silver prices have almost doubled.

The Diyat amount is reviewed and adjusted every year by the government, according to changes in the price of the silver that is distributed.

What Is Diyat in Pakistan?

In Pakistan’s criminal justice system, Diyat, or ‘blood money,’ is monetary compensation given to the legal heirs of the victim when the law allows for a settlement or compromise between the parties.

The revised amount will be applicable for the eligible cases during FY 2026-27 as notified by the Ministry of Finance.
