After the Gul Plaza fire shook Karachi, the Sindh government officials confirmed a full rebuild, state-funded construction, and temporary spaces for traders. Compensation, safety audits, and investigations are now underway.
The Sindh government has decided to rebuild Gul Plaza after the fire destroyed one of Karachi’s busiest shopping centers. Officials say the project will use provincial funds and finish within one year.
The decision came after safety teams declared the structure unsafe. Rescue and recovery work is still ongoing.
What the Rebuild Plan Looks Like
Sources said that the government will reconstruct Gul Plaza as a multi-storey commercial building. Once construction ends, shops will return to their original allottees.
The Sindh government has hired architectural and engineering experts. Their task is to ensure safety standards and compliance before work begins.
Temporary Business Spaces for Affected Gul Plaza Fire Traders
Until the rebuild is complete, the government will shift traders to temporary locations. Officials have already selected three sites in Karachi for interim businesses.
The Sindh government has approved Rs10 million compensation for each family that lost a loved one in the incident.
Business losses are also being evaluated by a joint committee. Authorities are deliberating on the soft loans and other assistance to assist traders to reopen their trade following the Gul Plaza fire.
The police have started a forensic investigation to find out the cause of the fire. Audits of surrounding commercial properties are also being made by building control agencies.
Officials say the tragedy has exposed gaps in fire safety enforcement across Karachi.
The Gul Plaza fire killed at least 62 people. Seventy-seven remain missing. Authorities have identified 15 victims so far, while post-mortems of 48 bodies are complete.
