The mother of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Hammad Azhar has filed a habeas corpus petition in the Lahore High Court seeking her son’s recovery following his reported detention in Multan.
The mother of former federal minister Hammad Azhar moved to the Lahore High Court on Monday to secure his recovery. The petition names the Punjab Inspector General of Police (IG), the Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Lahore, and other relevant state authorities as respondents.
According to the petition, law enforcement agencies took Azhar into custody from Multan days prior, but authorities have not produced him before any judicial magistrate or court. The petitioner has urged the high court to order the immediate disclosure of his exact whereabouts, provide a complete record of all criminal cases registered against him and ensure his physical production in court.
Background of the Detention
Azhar’s detention follows a series of legal battles tied to the violent protests of 9 May 2023. Police sources indicate that the former MNA had been a proclaimed offender and fugitive in multiple cases linked to the May 9 riots. He largely remained underground during subsequent crackdowns.
While police officials initially offered different accounts regarding his custody, reports confirmed he was detained in Multan and transferred to Lahore police custody to face pending legal proceedings.
