The much-anticipated Malir Expressway project, which runs along the Malir River from Qayyumabad to Motorway M-9, was inaugurated on Saturday despite being incomplete. The decision has raised significant safety concerns for travelers, with many questioning the readiness of the expressway.
Malir Expressway Construction Still Underway?
The incomplete Malir Expressway safety concerns are evident, as ongoing construction work is observed at several points. Workers, construction materials, tractors, and heavy machinery are present on the expressway, creating hazards for motorists. Additionally, motorcyclists, often seen speeding without helmets or following traffic rules, dominate the road. The absence of traffic police or enforcement agencies adds to the chaos.
Incomplete Malir Expressway Safety Concerns
The expressway currently lacks essential barriers to prevent pedestrian crossings. People dangerously loiter or cross the road, further exacerbating the safety concerns. Motorcycles are frequently parked on the central divider, with groups of youngsters gathered there. Near the Shah Faisal Colony toll plaza, impromptu cricket matches have also been reported.
At the Qayyumabad starting point, interchanges remain unfinished. The Korangi Causeway interchanges are closed, and exit points are left open, allowing vehicles to travel one way. This improper setup highlights the safety risks of the incomplete Malir Expressway. Furthermore, the absence of guidance banners, directional signage, and speed limit indicators makes navigation challenging.
DIG Traffic Ahmed Nawaz Cheema acknowledged the situation, stating that two temporary traffic police vehicles were deployed, with permanent teams expected soon. Chief Minister Sindh’s spokesperson, Abdul Rasheed Channa, assured that security arrangements would commence within days, including 24-hour police patrolling and a Rescue 1122 unit for emergencies.
Named after Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the expressway remains unfinished and unable to meet its intended purpose. The incomplete Malir Expressway safety concerns underline the urgency for proper planning and execution to ensure the safety of travelers. As authorities work on addressing the gaps, travelers are urged to exercise caution while using the expressway.
