A severe heatwave alert has been issued for Karachi as temperatures continue to rise sharply, pushing the city into a dangerous hot weather spell on 30 May.
During the day, the weather in the city is likely to be much hotter than usual with high humidity and increased extremes in the coastal areas predicted by meteorological forecasts.
Rising Heat Stress in the City
The current heat wave has been causing discomfort to the people of Karachi, especially during the hottest part of the day. High humidity will likely increase the potential for heat-related illness, such as dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke, along with the high temperatures.
Citizens have been asked to avoid going outside unless it is absolutely necessary, particularly between 11 AM and 4 PM when the heat is likely to be at its peak.
Authorities Issue Safety Advisory
Local authorities and disaster management teams have urged residents to take precautionary measures. The public has been advised to:
- Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated
- Avoid direct sunlight during peak hours
- Wear light-colored and loose clothing
- Keep infants, elderly individuals, and patients in cool environments
- Use shade or cooling centers where available
Power Demand and Urban Strain Expected
With rising temperatures, electricity demand in Karachi is expected to increase significantly, potentially putting additional pressure on the power supply system. In addition, some residents may have a few intermittent disruptions in certain areas due to higher load conditions.
Emergency Preparedness in Place
Relevant authorities continue to be alert to deal with any heat related emergencies. Medical services are being urged to remain vigilant and monitor for higher traffic volumes of patients coming in associated with heat stress.
Weather experts have warned of extreme weather and are keeping a close eye on the situation as Karachi is about to enter one of the hottest periods of the year. Coastal residents are urged to take precaution and adhere to government recommendations during the current heat wave episode.
