Lt Gen Asim Munir has been appointed as new Army Chief by PM Shehbaz

The government has decided to name Lieutenant General Asim Munir as the next Chief of Army Staff (COAS).

Marriyum Aurangzeb, Minister of Information, made the announcement on Twitter. The premier made the decision while exercising his constitutional powers. She says that Lt Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza had ]chosen to chair the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif inform the media minutes after the announcement. He inform that the “advice” had been forwarded to President Arif Alvi.

Asif added that all issues had resolved in accordance with the law and the Constitution. He urged the nation not to view it through a “political lens.”

He expressed hope that the president would not make the appointment “controversial” and would support the premier’s advice.

Lieutenant General Asim Munir, the Pakistan Army’s Quartermaster General, is the senior most officer after outgoing Army Chief Qamar Javed Bajwa.

Lt-Gen Munir begun the service through the Officers Training School (OTS) programme in Mangla and was commissioned into the Frontier Force Regiment’s 23rd Battalion.

Lt-Gen Munir was a brigadier in the Force Command Northern Areas under Gen Bajwa, who was then Commander X Corps. In early 2017, he was name as Director General of Military Intelligence, and in October 2018, he was name Director General of ISI.

Lt-Gen Munir appointed Gujranwala Corps Commander eight months later. Two years later, he promoted to Quartermaster General at the General Headquarters.

Lt-Gen Munir received the Sword of Honour from the Officers Training School’s 17th course in Mangla. He is also the recipient of the Hilal-i-Imtiaz.

He is a ‘Hafiz-e-Quran,’ having memorised the Quran while serving as a Lieutenant Colonel in Saudi Arabia.
