The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) just overhauled the federal firearms licensing system, and if you’ve ever dealt with the “December 31st deadline” nightmare, you’ll know why this matters. Acting on Ministry of Interior directives, the authority has officially killed the rigid calendar-year expiry.
NADRA Updates Federal Firearms License Policy: No More December 31st Expiry
For years, every federal arms license in Pakistan expired on the final day of the year. It didn’t matter if you got your permit in January or November—come December 31st, you were back in line. This outdated rule caused a massive bottleneck at NADRA centers and robbed citizens of the validity they actually paid for.
The new digital system changes the math entirely. Now, your license is valid for a full five years starting from the actual date of issuance or renewal.
Key Changes to the Arms License System
The shift from a manual, date-fixed process to a fully digitized one brings several practical benefits:
- Fair Validity: You receive the exact 60-month period you are entitled to, regardless of when you apply.
- Zero Year-End Rush: By decoupling renewals from the calendar year, NADRA has effectively smoothed out the administrative load.
- Digital Integration: The entire process—from initial application to final issuance—is now handled through NADRA’s digital infrastructure.
Mobile Biometric Verification for Punjab
In a parallel move to boost accessibility, NADRA launched mobile biometric verification for Punjab arms licenses. This allows citizens to verify their identity through the PakID mobile app, bypassing the need for physical visits to NADRA centers for basic authentication. This is part of a broader push toward “Smart Licensing,” ensuring data transparency and reducing the chances of forgery.
Pro Tip: If you are holding a federal license, check your current issuance date. Your next renewal window will now align with that specific date in the future, not the end of this year.
