No Increase in Solar Panel Tax: IMF Gives Relief in Pakistan Budget Talks

In a major policy shift, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has reportedly agreed to withdraw the proposed increase in taxes on solar panels in Pakistan, providing significant relief to the country’s growing renewable energy sector.

The official statement comes following intensive negotiations by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif who had requested the IMF to reconsider imposing tax increases on essential green energy materials such as solar panels and relevant machinery.

IMF Solar Panel Tax Increase Withdrawn After Pakistan Government Intervention

Earlier, the IMF had also recommended raising taxes on solar panels in its broader fiscal reform recommendations in the coming Pakistan Federal Budget 2026–27. The IMF has, however, agreed not to impose extra taxes on solar energy products and stationery after much discussion.

This has been interpreted as Pakistan’s significant success in promoting affordable renewable energy and minimizing reliance on costly electricity sources.

Positive Impact on Solar Energy Prices in Pakistan

Experts say this move is likely to help moderate or even bring down the cost of solar panels in Pakistan, making solar power a more viable option for households, businesses, and farmers.

With the costs of electricity and load-shedding concerns, the country has experienced a significant surge in solar installations. With the proposed tax hike withdrawn, the local solar market is likely to continue to grow.

Government Continues IMF Negotiations on Real Estate Taxes

Progress has been made on solar panels and stationary goods; however, discussions continue between Pakistan and the IMF regarding proposed tax breaks and changes for real estate in Pakistan.

The government is advocating for relief measures to help economic growth amid fiscal discipline under the IMF program, officials said.
