The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has lodged a plea with the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) for a gas tariff escalation, slated to commence from July 1, 2024. The proposal outlines SSGC’s intent to augment the tariff by Rs324 per million British thermal units (mmbtu), setting a new average rate of Rs1740.80 per mmbtu.
OGRA has earmarked dates for hearings on SSGC’s appeal, with sessions lined up for today in Karachi and March 20 in Quetta. This tariff hike proposal is the latest in a series of gas price increments during the ongoing fiscal year.
In the backdrop of these developments, Pakistan’s economic delegation is in talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the second review under the SBA to unlock the disbursement of $1.1 billion. The delegation has reportedly given assurances to the IMF of impending hikes in gas and electricity tariffs.
