Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has formally rejected comedian Tabish Hashmi’s suggestion to privatize Karachi. Following the tragic Gul Plaza fire, Memon labeled the remarks as inflammatory and irresponsible. The Sindh government has now called for an internal media inquiry into the broadcasted statements regarding provincial authority.
Sharjeel Memon Criticizes Tabish Hashmi’s Karachi Comments
Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon addressed the media in Karachi on January 27, 2026. He responded to viral statements made by TV host Tabish Hashmi earlier this month. Memon described the idea of “selling” or privatizing the city as a direct attack on provincial sovereignty.
The minister stressed that these rhetoric efforts weaken the work of the elected government. He especially called on the private television channel to probe into the broadcast. Memon put the event in the context of media irresponsibility which can cause the separation of the different communities of Sindh.
The controversy started sometime in January 22, 2026, after the Gul Plaza fire incident. Tabish Hashmi, who was in a current affairs show, condemned the way Karachi was being run by the Sindh government. He pointed out on inresponsibility and urban tragedies that happen again.
The Hashmi compared it with the PIA privatization deal. A consortium headed by Arif Habib offered a bid of 135 billion rupees on the national carrier in late 2025. According to Hashmi, Karachi should be privatized as PIA is, since the state is not able to control the city. He came up with a proposal that the citizens of all orientations Pathans, Baloch, Sindhs, Muhajirs and Punjabis would unitely purchase and operate the city.
