Tomato Prices in Karachi Hit Rs 500 Per Kg Despite Iranian Imports

Tomato prices in Karachi have surged to as high as Rs500 per kilogram, adding to the financial burden on consumers already struggling with rising food costs. Despite the arrival of imported Iranian tomatoes, retail prices continue to climb across the city.

Media reports suggest that many vegetable vendors are selling Quetta and Iranian tomatoes at Rs450 to Rs500 per kg in some markets, with the price of tomatoes per quarter kg (250 grams) reaching Rs110 to Rs125.

Some retailers are selling smaller size and unripe tomatoes at comparatively lower prices of approximately Rs400 per kg but consumers argue that the prices are still out of the reach of many families.

Karachi tomato prices have jumped sharply, leaving consumers wondering how the market will stabilize, as they hoped imported tomatoes would bring some relief. Rather, there has been a feeling of frustration among many residents that the prices of vegetables continue to increase, despite the fact that supply is improving.

Consumers have asked the relevant bodies to step into the market and put an end to the price hikes and make tomato affordable for people.

The hike in the price of tomato in Karachi comes at a time when the Food Inflation is still a matter of concern and the people have been expecting the government intervention in bringing relief to the citizens affected by the skyrocketing grocery prices.
