Heavy snowfall and glacier debris force complete shutdown of key route between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan
Authorities have once again closed the Babusar Top road for all types of traffic until June 6, as ongoing clearance operations continue to remove heavy snow, glaciers, and debris blocking the high-altitude route.
According to an official travel advisory, persistent snowfall and adverse weather conditions have significantly slowed down restoration work on the strategically important corridor linking Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with Gilgit-Baltistan.
Snow, glaciers and debris obstruct key mountain route
Officials stated that multiple sections of the road remain buried under thick snow and glacier deposits, requiring extensive mechanical clearing before it can be safely reopened for traffic.
The clearance operation is being jointly carried out by the National Highway Authority along with the local administration to ensure safe passage for travelers and transport vehicles.
Authorities emphasized that weather conditions in the high-altitude region remain unstable, making continuous operations difficult and time-consuming.
Previously opened on one-way basis
Earlier, the route had been partially opened on a one-way traffic basis to facilitate limited movement toward Babusar Top and Gilgit-Baltistan. However, officials have now suspended all traffic completely due to worsening conditions and safety concerns.
Travel advisory issued for tourists and transporters
Officials have advised travelers, transport operators, and tourists to avoid using the route until further notice and to follow official updates before planning any journey through the region.
They added that the road will only be reopened once full clearance is completed and safety is ensured for all types of vehicles.
