Elon Musk announced that SpaceX is pivoting its primary focus from Mars to the Moon. The goal? A self-growing “Lunar City” that could be operational in less than a decade.
For the first time, Musk provided a concrete timeline for civilian potential: a trip to the Moon takes just two days, and launch windows open every 10 days.

SpaceX is officially prioritizing a lunar settlement over Mars. Musk cited logistical speed as the main driver. While Mars missions take six months and only launch every 26 months, the Moon is accessible almost weekly. This allows SpaceX to build infrastructure and transport passengers with unprecedented frequency.
The “Self-Growing” Lunar City
The project relies on autonomous robots and AI from Musk’s company, xAI. These systems will build the city with minimal human help. The base will also house space-based data centers, which Musk claims are more energy-efficient than those on Earth.
Moon vs. Mars: The Logistics
| Feature | Moon Mission | Mars Mission |
| Travel Time | 2 Days | 6 Months |
| Launch Window | Every 10 Days | Every 26 Months |
| Goal Timeline | Under 10 Years | 20+ Years |
This shift aligns with the U.S. government’s push to return to the Moon by 2028. Under President Donald Trump’s space policy, the U.S. aims for a permanent lunar base and a nuclear reactor on the surface by 2030. SpaceX remains a key partner in NASA’s Artemis program, despite recent lander delays.
