NADRA Launches Chipless CNIC and Self-Service Kiosks

NADRA has introduced a new chipless identity card and self-service kiosks in order to speed up verification and make public services easier.

The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) started rolling out the new chipless National Identity Card (CNIC) on August 14 in 2026. The update supports encrypted QR code which replaces the traditional microchip used for the past 14 years.

These cards are locally manufactured by the National Security Printing Company (NSPC) in Karachi. It helps lower production costs and removes reliance on imported chips.

What Changes with the New Chipless Card

QR Code Technology

The card uses a secure QR code instead of a chip. Officials and authorized organizations can scan the code using ordinary smartphones and the PakID app.

Card Details

  • Personal information, photographs and addresses are printed in both English and Urdu.
  • Special symbols mark senior citizens, organ donors, persons with disabilities, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir residents.

Old Cards Remain Valid

Citizens do not need to replace their current identity cards immediately. Existing CNICs stay valid until their printed expiry dates.

NADRA Deploys Automated Kiosks

NADRA has also launched self service kiosks at major registration centers across Pakistan. These automated machines allow citizens to complete tasks quickly without standing in long queues

Using these Kiosks, people can:

  • Renew CNIC or NICOP
  • Apply for lost card replacements
  • Take their own biometric inputs
  • Print Child Registration Certificates (Form-B) and Family Registration Certificates (FRC)
  • Request non-printable modifications
  • Update documents
  • Process initial fee independently
