Fatima Zahra Becomes First Pakistani Woman Boxer to Win Commonwealth Games Medal

Pakistani boxer Fatima Zahra has made history by becoming the first Pakistani woman to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games, marking a major milestone for the country’s boxing programme.

The 22-year-old clinched a 60kg semi-final spot after Tuesday’s quarter-final victory over New Zealand’s Jordan Wilson, 22, by a unanimous 5-0 decision. Fatima will become Pakistan’s first female boxer to win the medal in the Commonwealth Games boxing schema, as all losers in the semi-finals will receive a bronze medal.

Fatima was a delightful performer throughout the match and throughout the three rounds, she was able to command the game with confidence and composure. Four out of five judges gave her a 29-28 win and the fifth a 30-27 win.

The success was a big milestone for women’s boxing in Pakistan, which first participated in an international competition in 2016. The team has produced a historic Commonwealth Games medallist within 10 years since its inception, showcasing the steady progress of women’s boxing in the country.

Speaking following her win Fatima Zahra expressed faith in the future of Pakistani boxing.

“We are making progress in boxing, and this proves we are moving in the right direction. This is our first achievement, but we are hopeful of winning the gold medal as well. This medal will be very important for boxing in Pakistan,” she said.

Fatima will now take on Canada’s Mary Bathoul Alahmadieh in the semi-final on Friday. If she wins, she will be in the finals and get a great chance to win the gold medal and produce a new page in Pakistan’s sporting history.

Pakistan’s Male Boxers Bow Out

Fatima Zahra had a historic success but Pakistan’s male boxing contingent could not make a similar impact.

Qudrat Ullah lost his fight to Jude Gallagher of Northern Ireland in the 60kg division to become the final Pakistani male boxer to be eliminated.

Gallagher took a bold shot in the first round and Qudrat Ullah was hit again with a one-point penalty in the second round for repeatedly bringing his head down. Gallagher’s attempt at a comeback in the last round was not successful, but he did hang on to win it.

Disappointment in Athletics and Swimming

Pakistan also endured a difficult day in other sporting events.

In athletics, Muhammad Ismail finished 41st out of 46 athletes in the 400 metres, while swimmer Hamza Asif placed 46th out of 70 competitors in the 50m butterfly heats, missing out on qualification for the semi-finals.

Fatima Zahra’s historic win has been a major triumph for women’s sports in Pakistan, far surpassing the performances in other events and now motivating a new generation of female boxers.
