Iran’s Martyrs’ Headquarters has reportedly announced a six-day state funeral program for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, to be held across five major cities from July 4 to July 9, according to PressTV and local Iranian reports.
The program is said to involve massive nationwide ceremonies in Tehran, religious customs in Qom and burial ceremonies in Mashhad.
Tehran to Host Opening Funeral Ceremonies
The formal farewell ceremonies expected to start on July 4 and 5 at Imam Khomeini Mosalla in Tehran. A second public gathering will also take place on July 6 in the capital city, where thousands of mourners are expected, in a central area.
The coffin will accompanied by several figures known as “martyrs” and pass through important national landmarks in the state ceremony.
Religious Prayers Planned in Qom
Funeral prayers are likely to take place in Qom, one of Iran’s religious hubs, on July 7. The ceremony expected to be attend by senior clerics and scholars of religion, given its importance in Shia Islam.
Procession May Extend to Iraq’s Holy Cities
The funeral convoy will then head to Iraq, where ceremonies will held on July 8 in two of the holiest cities in Shia Islam, Najaf and Karbala. Final arrangements and timings will confirmed by the Iraqi authorities.
Final Burial in Mashhad at Imam Reza Shrine
It reported that the final burial will take place at the holy shrine of Imam Reza in the city of Mashhad on July 9. The timing is related to a religious event of the martyrdom of Imam Sajjad, according to organizers.
International Participation Expected
The event expected to be attend by political and diplomatic delegations from various countries, underscoring the significance of the occasion for the region.
Pakistan Confirms Delegation Attendance
In the related development, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declared that a Pakistan delegation will be present at the funeral proceedings. He stated that the decision is a manifestation of goodwill between Pakistan and Iran in bilateral relations.
