US President Donald Trump has claimed that China does not want Iran to develop nuclear weapons, while also alleging that Chinese President Xi Jinping assured him that Beijing would not supply weapons to Tehran.
During a conversation with Fox News, Trump commented on the Middle East and tensions with Iran. He said the U.S. was “helping” China by keeping Iran from becoming a nuclear-armed nation.
Trump said that China also has concerns about Iranian acquiring a nuclear weapon due to its strategic and economic interests in the region. He stressed Beijing’s strong dependence on Iranian oil supplies and desire to keep Iran stable while avoiding any regional instability.
The US president also said that the Chinese President had promised not to supply arms to Iran, a promise he described as “very big deal.” But the Chinese government has not yet officially denied or confirmed Trump’s comments.
China-Iran Relations Under Global Spotlight
China and Iran have close ties in the economic field, especially the energy sector. Despite the international sanctions and geopolitical tensions over Tehran’s nuclear program, China continues to be one of the biggest buyers of Iranian oil.
Trump’s latest remarks come as global anxiety continues regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions and as renewed discussion of diplomatic efforts, sanctions and regional security continues. Western nations, particularly the United States, have long raised fears that Iran might be making strides toward developing nuclear capability, and Tehran has repeatedly said its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes.
US-Iran Tensions Continue
The U.S.-Iranian relationship has been tense in recent years regarding sanctions, regional conflicts and nuclear talks between the two countries. Trump has always been firm on Iran and has continuously attacked previous agreements regarding Tehran’s nuclear endeavors.
Trump’s comments could fuel international discussion about China’s place in Middle Eastern affairs and the future of international efforts to block the proliferation of nuclear weapons in the region, political analysts said.
