Iran Refuses to Give Up Uranium Stockpile as US Talks Continue

The United States and Iran remain divided over Tehran’s enriched uranium stockpile and control of the Strait of Hormuz despite signs of limited progress in ongoing negotiations.

US President Donald Trump stated Washington would eventually assume control of Iran’s “highly enriched uranium,” which the US alleges the regime is using for nuclear weapons development. Iran rejects the claim and says its nuclear program is peaceful.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said recent talks were “some good signs” but Iran’s reported intentions to impose tolls on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz could complicate talks.

The Strait of Hormuz is the site of a significant share of global oil traffic and the unrest in the area drove some price swings during Thursday’s trading session.

In the interim, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards threatened counterstrikes if military action continues, and Trump reiterated that the US has the means to pursue more action if talks don’t get anywhere.

There were also reports that Pakistan was also involved in a behind-the-scenes effort through the mediation of Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir and Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi with Tehran.

The ongoing standoff continues to raise concerns over global energy supplies and oil market stability.
