Israel has reportedly leased land in occupied Jerusalem to the United States for the construction of a permanent U.S. Embassy under a 99-year agreement worth just $1, according to foreign media reports.
The land, located in occupied East Jerusalem, will reportedly be used for the development of a permanent American diplomatic mission. The symbolic lease has revived the issue of the status of Jerusalem and Palestinian land ownership.
Adalah, an Israeli human rights group, reported that the property was originally owned by Palestinian families prior to 1948. The organization said that the land was taken over by Israel in 1950.
The deal has stirred up the controversy surrounding the legal rights of Palestinian ownership over occupied Jerusalem, which is where the land was once situated.
East Jerusalem is still under occupation, according to international law, and it is one of the most disputed places in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
