The City Mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, recently delivered a speech to a multi-faith audience, highlighting the moral and ethical significance of migration and inspiring with the teachings of Islam. In his speech, the mayor used the Hijrah, the historic migration of Prophet Muhammad between Mecca and Medina, as an act of mercy, shelter, and care of the people who had to leave their homelands because of persecution or difficulty.
Mayor Mamdani disclosed that the Hijrah is a symbol of dignity, safety, and care of the community, and emphasized that all religious traditions support the same values, such as assisting the vulnerable and defending justice. He encouraged citizens to be compassionate and supportive of migrants and refugees who are in need of refuge and improved livelihood.
Besides his speech, the Mayor, Mamdani, also declared a new executive order to give more strength to New York City on abusive immigration enforcement practices. The order aims to strengthen the already existing protection measures and uphold local laws that protect the immigrants by the city agencies as well.
“New York City remains committed to being a safe place for all residents, regardless of background or immigration status,” Mayor Mamdani said. “No one should live in fear while accessing basic services or participating in city life.”
The city authorities observed that the executive order reaffirms the long-standing New York policies that restrict cooperation with counterproductive immigration enforcement practices. Community leaders and immigrant rights organizations received the move as a positive statement of inclusion, safety, and social justice.
Mayor Mamdani ended the event by urging residents to be united, shield each other, and maintain the principles of benevolence, fairness, and unity in the hardest of circumstances.
