The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave alert for the upcoming Eid ul Azha holidays, warning that temperatures may surge significantly above normal across large parts of the country, with some areas expected to face extreme heat conditions reaching up to 50°C.
According to the advisory issued by Pakistan Meteorological Department, a strong high-pressure system is likely to develop in the upper atmosphere around May 25 and intensify by May 26. With this influence, moderate to severe heatwave conditions are anticipated to remain in Pakistan from May 25 to May 31.
Sindh Likely to Face Extreme Heat
The alert also points out that Sindh will be one of the worst hit areas with high temperature ranging from 47°C to 50°C during the heat wave.
The weather is also likely to be hot and humid in Karachi, with temperatures expected to range from 35°C to 38°C. The humidity along with the high temperatures might create discomfort for residents, although slightly less than Sindh’s interior regions.
Other Affected Regions
The PMD has also singled out a few districts in Sindh, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces which are likely to face very hot weather like:
Sukkur, Jacobabad, Larkana, Dadu, Hyderabad, Tharparkar, Mirpurkhas, Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalpur, Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Sahiwal, Mianwali, Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, and surrounding areas.
High temperatures could reach up to 47°C to 50°C in these areas over the next few days.
Advisory and Precautionary Measures
The police have urged people to take safety precautions during the Eid holidays, especially during the hottest part of a day, by staying out of the sun, drinking plenty of water and taking care of those who are more susceptible like children, elderly, and outdoor workers.
Health experts also recommend minimizing unnecessary outdoor activity, wearing light-colored clothing, and ensuring proper ventilation in homes and workplaces.
The PMD has urged citizens to stay updated with official weather alerts as conditions may intensify further depending on atmospheric developments.
