Lahore Education Authority introduces stricter regulations for tuition centres after Kahna tragedy

LAHORE: Following the tragic roof collapse at a tuition center in Kahna, the Punjab government has decided to introduce amendments to existing private education laws and consider a formal regulatory framework for tuition centers.

Sources said the government is reviewing amendments to the 1984 Private Educational Institutions Ordinance, as the 41-year-old law does not clearly cover tuition centers, creating a legal gap regarding their registration, monitoring and safety standards.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the District Education Authority (DEA) Lahore, Tariq Mehmood, said there had previously been no mechanism to register or regulate tuition centres operating from private homes.

Following the Kahna tragedy, the Lahore Education Authority has ordered an emergency survey of all tuition centres, coaching academies and educational buildings across the city.

According to sources, a private member’s bill related to the regulation of tuition centers was also introduced in the Punjab Assembly in 2025, proposing compulsory registration, inspections and safety requirements.

The Punjab government is now reviewing the earlier bill and other proposals to introduce effective legislation for the regulation and monitoring of tuition centers across the province.
