In a pioneering move to foster inclusivity, the Punjab provincial government has launched an innovative program offering discounted travel cards for individuals with disabilities. This initiative, by the Punjab Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Act, aims to significantly reduce travel costs for people contending with disabilities, fostering greater accessibility to public transportation.
Under the program, individuals with disabilities can avail themselves of a noteworthy 50% reduction in fares when using public transportation services. To qualify for these discounted travel cards, interested individuals must possess an officially sanctioned disability certificate from the government. The application process is conveniently facilitated at the offices of the Deputy Director of Social Welfare in their respective districts.
This visionary initiative builds on the province’s commitment to inclusivity and follows the footsteps of last year’s announcement, where the interim provincial administration provided complimentary travel privileges to elderly citizens and students on the Orange Line Metro Train, Metro Bus Service, and Speedo Bus Service. Although this service was temporarily discontinued during the winter break, recent directives from the interim Chief Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, have reinstated the cost-free travel provision for students up to the twelfth grade.
As the reinstated privilege takes effect, students can now enjoy complimentary travel across all Metro Buses and the Orange Line Train until the onset of the summer break. This strategic move aligns with the province’s dedication to creating a more accessible and inclusive public transportation system, ensuring that individuals with disabilities and students alike can navigate the region conveniently and affordably.
