Ronaldo Reportedly Sets Condition for Return to Portugal National Team

Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly set a condition for returning to Portugal’s national team after leaving the squad following a dispute over his treatment by head coach Jorge Jesus. A report says the 41-year-old will not return while Jesus remains in charge.

According to a report by CNN Portugal, Ronaldo is open to returning to the national team but does not want to do so as long as Jesus remains head coach. The report comes days after Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp following a disagreement over his role in the team.

Ronaldo was an unused substitute during Portugal’s 2-1 win over Norway. Jesus had also indicated that Ronaldo would not start against Denmark. Ronaldo then left the training camp in Copenhagen after speaking with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença. He said he would explain his reasons for leaving “in due course.”

Jesus Leaves Door Open for Ronaldo

Jesus has taken a different position on Ronaldo’s future with Portugal. The coach said Ronaldo can return if he wants to and that the two can discuss the situation before the next international call-up.

The Portuguese Football Federation president has also described the situation as a “misunderstanding” and said Ronaldo remains part of the national team if he is technically fit to play.

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s most-capped player and leading international scorer, with 146 goals in 234 appearances.

The Al Nassr forward has also indicated that 2026 could be his final year as a professional footballer, leaving his international future uncertain as Portugal continues its Nations League campaign.
