How Egypt’s Sarah Khalifa Went from Crime Show Host to Death Row

Egyptian television presenter Sarah Khalifa once investigated criminals on her show Mission Impossible, but she now faces execution by hanging after being convicted in a massive synthetic drug manufacturing and trafficking ring.

The sudden fall of 39-year-old television host and entrepreneur Sarah Khalifa has shocked the public across Egypt and the wider region.

Best known for hosting the security and crime-focused television program Mission Impossible on Al-Mehwar TV, Khalifa managed a high-profile lifestyle that included owning a cosmetic surgery clinic and an event-planning business. She had over 2 million followers on Instagram.

Her Downfall

Her trajectory shifted dramatically in April 2025 when Egyptian authorities arrested her during a spread-out drug crackdown. Prosecutors built a case around an organized criminal network that allegedly imported raw materials from abroad to store in residential properties for producing synthetic drugs.

According to investigators, law enforcement seized over 750 kg of narcotics, unlicensed firearms, and ammunition. Investigators alleged that Khalifa helped finance the operation and traveled abroad to meet with key ringleaders.

Her Legal Battles

During court proceedings before the Cairo Criminal Court, Khalifa broke down in tears, denying all accusations against her. She pleaded for mercy, stating “Please listen to me, sir. My parents raised me well; they are people who pray, and I don’t need drug money.” She maintained throughout the trial that she had never touched drugs or even smoked a cigarette in her life.

Despite her defense, the court found her and 11 co-defendants (including her brother Mohamed Khalifa) guilty, handing down death sentences by hanging. Nine other defendants received life imprisonment, while seven were acquitted.

Additionally, Khalifa was handed a separate 3-year prison term for assaulting and filming her driver.

What Happens Next?

By law, the death sentences first had to be sent to Egypt’s Grand Mufti for a non-binding religious opinion. Now that this step is done, the court has officially confirmed the death sentences, but they can still be challenged.

Khalifa’s defense lawyers are preparing to appeal the decision in Egypt’s Court of Cassation, meaning this famous legal case will continue.
