The White House has confirmed that U.S. Vice President JD Vance will not be departing tonight for Switzerland, where planned technical-level discussions with Iran were expected to take place. Officials said the schedule for the negotiations has not yet been finalized, leading to a temporary delay in travel arrangements.
The United States delegation is still ready to leave after logistical and diplomatic arrangements have been finalized, a White House spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said they are ready to discuss the matter, but the timing of the talks is still not known because there are still coordination challenges.
US–Iran Technical Talks Still in Planning and Coordination Phase
The expected discussions in Switzerland are believed to be only technical diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran, but officials say they are not at a stage for action.
The White House, however, has not finalized logistics for the talks, nor has it released a last-minute timetable for the U.S. delegation’s departure.
According to diplomatic sources, the talks are ongoing but there are delays because of procedural and coordination issues in determining the meeting agenda.
White House Emphasizes Flexibility on Next Steps
The administration has said it is ready to move forward to discussion when conditions are right on both sides.
Authorities reiterated that they would provide updates as soon as an agreed timeline is agreed to for the next steps in the diplomatic process.
The announcement does not indicate that the talks are off, but rather uncertainty about the engagement’s structure and timing.
Growing Uncertainty Around US–Iran Diplomatic Engagement
The delay reflects the ongoing uncertainty in US–Iran relations, which often suffer from logistical, political, and procedural hurdles.
While Switzerland has been an impartial forum for delicate diplomatic negotiations in the past, officials say the timing and coordination is one of the big hurdles in this round.
The talks continue and the latest White House statement states that the Switzerland talks are not yet ready, though there is still diplomatic coordination. More details are likely to follow after both sides have agreed on the time and format of the talks.
