Global oil markets recorded a sharp rise on Thursday after reports that Iran announced a move to completely close the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears of a major disruption in global energy supply.
According to international media reports, including BBC, Asian financial markets reacted immediately to the escalating tensions between Iran and United States. A potential closure of one of the world’s vital oil shipping lanes caused a panicked response in energy markets, sending crude oil prices up.
Brent Crude Oil, the global benchmark, rose almost 2% in early Asian trading, crossing $95 a barrel. The sharp rise is tied to worries over possible supply disruptions and instability in the Middle East region.
One of the most strategically important choke points in the world, the Strait of Hormuz is a route through which a significant share of the global shipment of crude oil travels every day. Any risk to its operations usually results in instant volatility of international oil prices.
Market participants responded rapidly to the fear that the situation might deteriorate further, especially after the prospect of attacks on commercial shipping vessels, said market analysts. Consequently, investors moved to less risky investments, and oil markets began to factor in increased risk premiums.
If it persists, energy experts say oil prices may keep climbing over the next few days, impacting global fuel costs, transportation costs and inflation rates. If supply routes are volatile, countries that rely heavily on imported oil will experience more of a negative impact.
The latest surge highlights how geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to play a critical role in global energy stability. Any prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could significantly tighten global oil supply and push prices even higher.
Trade activity is currently very active and traders are paying close attention to any developments between Iran and the United States, as concerns of further escalation persist.
