U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that a meeting between the United States and Iran will take place in Doha, Qatar, today, saying the talks were requested by Tehran.
Trump, speaking to reporters at the Oval office, said the U.S.-Iran meeting in Doha may be significant, but urged caution on the outcome.
“The meeting could be significant, or it may not be,” Trump said while commenting on the upcoming negotiations.
The U.S. president also claimed that Iran has agreed not to possess nuclear weapons, reiterating Washington’s long-standing position that Tehran must not develop nuclear capabilities. He did not give any further information about the reported understanding.
US-Iran Doha Meeting to Include High-Level and Technical Talks
In the meantime, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Kushner, who is Trump’s son-in-law, would be in Doha this week to meet with Iranian officials.
According to the White House, the visit will include both high-level diplomatic talks and technical negotiations, aimed at addressing key issues between the two countries.
The US-Iran talks in Doha are taking place as international pressure continues on both sides to defuse tensions stemming from Iran’s nuclear ambitions and wider regional concerns.
Trump Highlights Falling Global Oil Prices
In his speech, Trump also referenced falling oil prices in the world, noting that international oil prices remain in downtrend.
Doha is closely monitored by global watchers, with any advancement in US-Iran nuclear negotiations potentially affecting regional stability, energy markets, and future U.S.-Iran diplomatic relations.
