A recent report published by Reuters regarding the deportation of Pakistani nationals from the United Arab Emirates has triggered criticism in Pakistan, with observers accusing the international news agency of presenting the issue through a questionable sectarian lens despite official statements pointing to regulatory violations as the primary cause.
The Reuters report, published on May 25, highlighted cases of Pakistani citizens allegedly deported from the UAE and attempted to connect the issue with sectarian concerns. However, Pakistani officials and analysts argue that such framing is misleading and risks importing regional tensions into Pakistan’s domestic environment.According to Pakistan’s Interior Ministry, the deportations were linked to violations of UAE laws and regulations, including residency, financial, cyber, and security-related matters. Officials stressed that the UAE applies its laws strictly and uniformly to expatriates regardless of nationality or sectarian background.
Analysts note that deportations over legal or administrative violations are not uncommon in Gulf countries, where immigration and residency laws are enforced rigorously. Similar cases involving citizens from various South Asian countries have also been reported in the past.
Critics further pointed out that even the Reuters report acknowledged that UAE authorities did not officially cite sectarian reasons behind the deportations. Despite this, the story was perceived by many as attempting to frame the matter through a sectarian perspective.
Observers warned that selective amplification of isolated incidents without concrete evidence of systematic discrimination could fuel unnecessary divisions and damage Pakistan’s relations with friendly Gulf states.
Millions of Pakistanis belonging to different sects continue to live and work peacefully across Gulf countries, particularly in the UAE, contributing significantly to both local economies and Pakistan’s remittance inflows.
Commentators also cautioned that turning administrative or legal enforcement issues into sectarian narratives may unintentionally serve hostile information campaigns aimed at destabilizing Pakistani society and undermining regional partnerships.
The debate surrounding the Reuters report has since sparked discussions on responsible international reporting and the importance of avoiding speculative narratives in sensitive regional matters.
